Transfer of training from simulation to reality

The study aimed to explore the transfer of training from driving simulators to real-world scenarios, addressing skepticism among trainees and instructors regarding modern training tools. Two experiments were conducted: the first involved inexperienced drivers learning a kinematics task, while the second focused on experienced drivers tackling a haptic and cognitive driving task. These experiments facilitated a comparison of training effectiveness between simulators and real systems. Results indicated that both driving simulators demonstrated comparable training effectiveness to the real system, confirming the existence of transfer of training for the tasks practiced. However, both simulators also exhibited instances of negative transfer, attributed to a lack of feedback mechanisms or overly stringent performance metrics set by the simulator. The findings emphasize the importance of thorough task, user, and organization analyses in designing effective training simulators, which can significantly influence costs. Prior to implementing a driving simulator in educational programs, these analyses and validation studies must be rigorously conducted. Driving simulators provide a safe training environment for various tasks, offering objective, precise, and unbiased feedback to trainees. Additionally, they are cost-effective and environmentally friendly, warranting increased use in training, education, and professional development.
