Data management systems are essential for constructing large application systems, which have evolved from monolithic software to flexible, configurable collections of cooperative services. This shift necessitates that the data management layer adapts accordingly. Recently, these systems have transitioned from central management of individual records to platforms for data integration, federation, search services, and analysis. The work explores these emerging challenges in data management through various contributions, highlighting future directions in the field. These contributions honor Prof. em. Dr. Dr. -Ing. E. h. Hartmut Wedekind on his 70th birthday, featuring works by his academic descendants. Prof. Wedekind is a key figure in Germany's database management community and has an esteemed international reputation. Over the past 35 years, he has significantly advanced relational database technology. In the early 1970s, he authored two influential textbooks, “Datenbanksysteme I” and “Datenbanksysteme II,” which addressed the state of the art in the relational model and related topics. His work has been pivotal in developing the concept of modeling complex real-world scenarios using relational structures, greatly influencing the field's progress.
