ETAPS 2006 marked the ninth European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, an annual federated conference established in 1998. This year, it featured five conferences (CC, ESOP, FASE, FOSSACS, TACAS), 18 satellite workshops (including AC-CAT, AVIS, CMCS, COCV, DCC, EAAI, FESCA, FRCSS, GT-VMT, LDTA, MBT, QAPL, SC, SLAP, SPIN, TERMGRAPH, WITS, and WRLA), two tutorials, and seven invited lectures. The event received over 550 submissions across the conferences, resulting in an overall acceptance rate of 23%, with each conference maintaining acceptance rates below 30%. Congratulations to the authors selected for the final program, and appreciation is extended to all participants for their contributions. The conferences cover various aspects of the system development process, including specification, design, implementation, analysis, and improvement, as well as the languages, methodologies, and tools that support these activities. The blend of theory and practice is emphasized, leaning towards theory with practical motivations while maintaining a foundation in sound practice. The focus on software issues also acknowledges their relevance to general systems, including hardware.
