While other states imposed economic sanctions on apartheid South Africa, Swiss authorities maintained that it was a state like any other. Swiss corporations viewed South Africa as an attractive trade partner, even profiting from boycotts imposed by others. Some political factions openly supported the Pretoria regime. In 1997, spurred by discussions about Swiss actions during World War II, a historical study of Swiss relations with apartheid South Africa was commissioned by the Swiss parliament and Federal Council. This report, executed by the Swiss National Science Foundation, consolidates findings from ten research projects. It identifies key players in shaping relations with South Africa, explains the legal context of their actions, and explores the thought processes behind these decisions. A significant chapter focuses on economic attitudes and activities, particularly trade involving loans, gold, diamonds, and war materials. Other sections address non-economic aspects, such as political statements, the illusion of mediation, and cultural and sports contacts, culminating in a shift towards supporting the black majority after 1986.
