Neapolitan, with a rich literary tradition dating back to the late 13th century and notable diachronic and synchronic variation, holds a unique position among Romance languages. This offers linguists a rare chance to examine the structural evolution of a lesser-known variety. Despite the influence of other Romance languages on theoretical discussions about language structure, variation, and change, Neapolitan is often overlooked due to a lack of widely known or thoroughly analyzed data regarding its significance. Consequently, its potential contributions to both Romance linguistics and broader linguistic theory remain largely unrecognized. The current volume seeks to address this gap by providing extensive documentation and a detailed diachronic description of Neapolitan phonology, morphology, and syntax. This work serves as a comprehensive reference grammar while allowing individual linguistic facts to be studied within a coherent framework and compared with other Romance languages. The findings not only shed light on the underexplored structure of Neapolitan but also contribute to cataloging the linguistic typology of dialects in Italy, bridging the divide between well-known standard Romance languages and lesser-known varieties.
