The 15th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry took place at University College London from 30 June to 4 July 2008, attracting over 300 participants from 30 countries. The event aimed to reinforce the role of mathematics as a vital resource for industry and business. Attendees engaged through contributed talks, minisymposium presentations, and plenary lectures, showcasing a wide range of applications and techniques. Notably, the Alan Tayler Lecture by Mario Primicerio addressed challenges in oil pipeline flow affected by temperature variations and wax shearing properties. Additionally, Lauri Harhanen, a Master’s student from Helsinki University of Technology and Wacker Prize winner, presented innovative mathematics that enabled new software to capture real-time dental images from modern machinery data. The conference gathered prominent figures from government, business, and science, all united in promoting the application of innovative mathematics in industry and identifying sectors ripe for new insights and ideas.
