Gustav Jacobsthal (1845-1912) was a pivotal figure in musicology at the University of Strasbourg for 33 years, contributing significantly to European music history. His archive, housed in the State Library in Berlin, is published here for the first time, with the editor providing precise transcriptions, introductions, and extensive notes. The documents reveal surprising insights: Jacobsthal's studies on the Codex Montpellier suggest innovative alternatives for early motets, while his interpretations of Palestrina’s vocal polyphony extend beyond the 'Berlin School.' He uncovers novel aria forms and instrumentation in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, highlighting Emanuel Bach’s “Württemberg Sonatas” as crucial to the early quartets of Haydn and Mozart. Furthermore, he emphasizes the transformative impact of Mozart’s Idomeneo in moving beyond the opera seria genre. The editor, Peter Sühring, born in Berlin in 1946, studied Music, Literature, and Philosophy in Tübingen and Berlin, earning his doctorate with a focus on Mozart’s early operas. He continues to edit Jacobsthal's works and has published extensively on various musical topics, including the French Enlightenment and composers like Mozart, Schumann, and Heine.
