Meer over het boek
Scarlett Hooft Graafland often spends months at the world's edges, waiting for the moment when her vivid fantasies transform into reality. In her feverish dream-like creations, Bolivian women wave candyfloss on salt pans, polar bear entrails form palm trees at the North Pole, and dromedaries with colorful humps traverse the desert. Hats float above hot springs, and a stuffed blue reindeer stands out among its living counterparts. These extraordinary settings gain their poetry through her photographic images, marking the achievement of a third reality—the magic of the image that could not have been imagined beforehand. Hooft Graafland's work, straddling photography, performance, and sculpture, showcases her meticulously choreographed live performances in diverse landscapes, from Bolivia's salt flats to the Arctic regions of Canada and Norway, rural China and India, Iceland's lava fields, and the Dutch countryside. Captivated by the surreal beauty of these rugged natural environments, she employs them as her canvas. The Dutch artist has exhibited her work in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including the Rencontres d’Arles, the World Expo in Shanghai, the MOCCA Museum in Toronto, and the Huis Marseille Museum for Photography in Amsterdam.
