In recent years, many artists have claimed a role in research, prompting a discussion on 'artistic research' as a discipline-independent concept. Intellectual Birdhouse provides a platform for various contributors to express their perspectives on this claim. The book posits that artistic research can emerge in diverse contexts once epistemological expectations are redefined. This perspective emphasizes the exploration of models, terms, and concepts that illuminate the processes and outcomes of epistemic-artistic practices, while also engaging with historical theoretical debates. Edited by Florian Dumbois, Ute Meta Bauer, Claudia Mareis, and Michael Schwab, the work reflects the multifaceted nature of artistic practices. Ute Meta Bauer is an associate professor at MIT, leading the Program in Art, Culture and Technology. Florian Dumbois, an artist focused on landforms and tectonic activity, teaches at Zurich University of the Arts. Claudia Mareis, a designer and cultural scientist, is affiliated with eikones at the University of Basel. Michael Schwab, an artist and researcher, serves as a tutor at the Royal College of Art and holds positions at Bern University of the Arts and the Orpheus Institute in Ghent.
