A generic framework for heterogeneous resource federation

Meer over het boek

This doctorate thesis presents a framework for information and communication technology resource federation, focusing on sharing and accessing heterogeneous resources across various administrative domains. The main research outcomes include three design artifacts: a federation model, a federation methodology, and a system instantiation, which abstract the types of resources to be federated. These resources can range from general-purpose physical and virtual machines to software packages and specialized proprietary devices. Resource capabilities are presented in a service-oriented manner, allowing for meaningful combinations to meet service consumer requirements. A key user segment is the scientific community, which often needs diverse resources for large-scale research experiments. Users benefit from seamless access to a wide array of resources through unified interfaces. Resource providers gain an additional sales channel, improved resource utilization, compensation for services rendered, and access to new user groups. A federation organization is responsible for maintaining relationships with stakeholders and providing central services to ensure smooth operation.
