Your students are evolving, and so is technology and the classroom experience. Consequently, the way students learn German is also transforming. In preparing for this edition, extensive research was conducted through surveys, focus groups, and ethnographic studies to pinpoint the primary goals and challenges of introductory German courses. Communication and cultural competence emerged as top priorities for instructors, who are grappling with fewer contact hours, budget constraints, and new course formats that complicate these objectives. The latest edition continues to embrace a communicative approach that fosters functional proficiency while adapting to these changing needs in innovative ways. As a result of our findings, we developed Connect German (www.connectgerman.com), an online learning platform featuring an ebook, an online Arbeitsbuch, an audio/video chat feature, and a new video filmed in Leipzig, providing a flexible solution for the evolving landscape of introductory German. Enhanced by these digital tools, the new edition engages students with authentic culture and inspires confident communication by offering natural contexts for language skill development.
