Meer over het boek

Alcuin and Einhard recount how Peter, an elderly deacon from Pisa, crossed the Alps to teach Latin grammar to Charlemagne from 774 to 790. Previously residing in Pavia, Peter interacted with influential figures at Charlemagne's court, exchanging poems with Angilbert of St Riquier and Paul the Deacon. Several grammatical works attributed to Peter are published here for the first time. The Quaestiunculae in Priscianum presents grammatical doctrine from Priscian’s Ars in the form of questions and answers. The Ars Petri, Peter’s commentary on Donatus, dedicated to Charlemagne, survives in three manuscripts. Additional texts linked to Peter of Pisa in the Codex Diezianus are also included. These works provide insight into the development of grammatical teaching in elite circles during Charlemagne’s reign.
