Destroyed in the Second World War and divided by the Wall, Berlin underwent a significant construction boom in the 1960s. Driven by a spirit of renewal and technological optimism, urban planners and architects envisioned radical new cityscapes for a modern society. Despite often facing criticism for being inhumane or unattractive, many notable architectural examples from this era have been demolished, altered, or are at risk today. This publication examines the context of this architecture's emergence, exploring both formal aspects and international influences in East and West Berlin. The architecture and urban design from the sixties continue to shape Berlin's landscape, with key planning decisions and striking buildings from this period. It offers the first comprehensive overview of this architectural heritage, featuring historical documents that reflect the political, social, and technical aspirations for a city recovering from devastation and division. The book delves into themes such as objectives and distinguishing characteristics of developments like Stalinallee, Alexanderplatz, Breitscheidplatz, and the Märkisches Viertel.
