In 1834, German immigrant D.T.F. (Detlef Thomas Friedrich) Jordt, also known as Detlef Dunt, published Reise nach Texas, a book that extolled Texas as a land of opportunity for immigrants. This work was the first by an on-the-ground observer to promote German immigration to Texas, offering a unique perspective on Austin's Colony, particularly in the lower Brazos region and areas like San Felipe, Industry, and Frelsburg, where Dunt lived with Friedrich Ernst and his family. Journey to Texas, 1833 presents the first English translation of Dunt's original text, vividly depicting the personalities, landscapes, and customs he encountered in colonial Texas just before the revolution. It includes practical advice for Germans considering emigration. The editors provide an introduction detailing the social, political, and economic factors that drove Europeans to Texas, alongside biographical insights into Dunt and his relationship with Ernst. The volume also features a bibliography of German literature about Texas and an interpretive essay that situates Dunt within the broader context of early German writings on Texas.
