Is it possible to ascertain Shakespeare’s opinions, thoughts, or ideas, even on trivial matters? This raises the question of whether it is misleading to confuse the author with his fiction. Rather than seeking certainty in the myriad statements made about him and his work, this essay aims to connect some of Shakespeare’s ‘non-historical’ plays to the politics of his time. It will explore the English Renaissance as a period of significant change and progress, followed by a literary analysis of Shakespeare’s plays, considering the prevailing political atmosphere. The essay emphasizes the interplay between Shakespeare's work and the contemporary political landscape, shedding light on how his plays reflect and engage with the issues of his era. By examining this relationship, we can gain a deeper understanding of the cultural context that shaped Shakespeare’s writing, even as we acknowledge the uncertainties surrounding his personal views.
