This volume addresses the heuristics of a three-dimensional knowledge society, differentiating and structuring its social, economic, and technical dimensions through elements like individual competences, collective learning, and integration in global systems. It focuses on in-depth studies in northeast Germany's rural areas, particularly Brandenburg, examining regional growth cores, health infrastructure, mobility, communication technology access, and educational networks. While the case studies do not represent the full complexity of the knowledge society in these peripheral areas, they illustrate how it manifests, the strategic challenges it presents, and the role of spatial planning in addressing these challenges. A notable issue is the shortage of skilled workers, highlighting a central challenge for the knowledge society in rural settings. The theoretical distinctions among dimensions often blur in practice, as economic innovations depend on social learning and bridging institutions. Both rural and metropolitan areas face competition and selection processes, leading to key challenges for rural regions. These challenges give rise to two strategic approaches: a participatory basic strategy and a profiling-focused flanking strategy. Spatial planning's contribution lies in raising awareness of spatial interrelations, organizing transformations, and guiding implementation while considering the diverse interests of regional act
