The story follows Harvey Cheyne, Jr., a privileged boy who finds himself overboard and rescued by fishermen after falling from a steamship. Stranded among the crew, he learns the ways of fishing with the help of Dan Troop, the captain's son. Through various challenges, Harvey transforms from a wealthy youth into a capable fisherman. Upon returning home, his family rewards his rescuers and sets him on a path to take over his father's shipping business. Kipling's only American-set novel combines adventure and humor, capturing a boy's journey into adulthood.
