Set in the early 19th century, the narrative follows Walter Hartright, a drawing teacher in love with his student, Laura Fairlie. Unable to marry her, Laura is forced into a marriage with the scheming Sir Percival Glyde, who, alongside the cunning Count Fosco, devises a plan to access her fortune by faking her death and confining her to a mental asylum. The story unfolds as Hartright, aided by Laura's determined half-sister Marian Halcombe, works to unravel their deceit and rescue Laura from her grim fate.
