In "Tulips In Tulips," artist duo Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings, alongside scholar Christina B. Hanhardt, examine authority and obedience in urban public spaces amid austerity, gentrification, and policing. Quinlan & Hastings, both born in 1991 and based in London, investigate the socio-cultural and political frameworks that perpetuate conservatism and discrimination within the LGBTQIA+ community. Their work highlights the displacement of the queer community’s “safe spaces” due to political strategies and explores how the narratives of femininity and colonized bodies have been shaped by the capitalist transition, particularly through the rationalization of social reproduction and self-ownership. Hanhardt, an Associate Professor in American Studies based in New York, focuses her research on U.S. social movements and urban development since the mid-20th century, emphasizing the politics of stigma, punishment, and uneven development. Together, they map a critical landscape that interrogates the intersections of identity, power, and space, revealing the complexities of belonging and resistance in contemporary society.
