Over the past three years, monuments have been re-evaluated globally, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. This volume explores the intricate relationships between monuments, memory, and cities in Central and South-Eastern Europe from a historical perspective. It emphasizes the role of (national) art since the nineteenth century, especially during the Second World War and across various socialist countries. The contributors critically analyze the diverse visual representations of historical memory and the complexities of “dissonant heritage” through a multidisciplinary lens, incorporating art history, cultural memory studies, historical visual studies, literary criticism, architectural history, and heritage protection. Case studies focus on cities in Croatia, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Northern Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. The authors include Robert Born, Daria Brasca, Dragan Damjanović, Irene Giviashvili, Donata Levi, Nenad Makuljević, Barbara Kristina Murovec, Patricia Počanić, Milan Popadić, Helena Rožman, Giovanni Rubino, Anke Schlecht, Svetlana Smolčić, Dirk Suckow, Iain B. Whyte, and Tanja Zimmermann. This work is published as Volume 72 in the series of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich.
