Manuscripts from the Byzantine era preserve lists of notable Greek authors across various literary and scientific genres, yet there has been limited research into their nature, chronology, origin, formation, and use. The volume Παραδείγματα offers a new critical edition of these lists, serving as a foundation for further discussion. One list, previously considered a single entity, is revealed to consist of two originally independent and diachronic lists: an older one linked to Alexandrian philology and another from the 5th-6th century AD, with additions extending to the 9th century, formed between Alexandria and Constantinople. A later list from the 13th-14th centuries differs significantly, reflecting all-Byzantine elements, partly rooted in Byzantine orthodoxy with the inclusion of Church Fathers and theologians, and influenced by cultural shifts of the 11th-12th centuries and the Second Sophistic. Each list's groups and authors are examined within their geo-historical context, considering their activity, production, textual tradition, and significance in Serorian scholarship. Additionally, the lists are compared with canons reformulated by Byzantine scholars. This volume is valuable for those interested in ancient literary and scientific-philosophical canons, the history of scholarship, and the role of classical and Church Fathers' texts in Byzantium.
