Executive Summary The project „‘Energy System Transformation in Aviation“’ is a coherent research programme of the Aeronautics Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFL) with a long-term, strategic focus on potentially game-changing technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation. New propulsion and drag reduction technologies were among the most promising candidate approaches. The basic idea of the project is to develop methods and tools which allow a sound pre-assesment of such new technologies and their individual potential. In addition, the interdisciplinary project has for instance also assessed the social and economic impact of new technologies with the objective of an overall system evaluation, including noise emissions, fleet planning, and passenger acceptance. This report gives an overview of the project and highlights the most outstanding results.
