Set against the backdrop of a tumultuous summer in 1995, the story follows ten-year-old Joan and her family as they escape her father's violence, returning to her mother's ancestral home in Memphis. This house carries a painful history, linked to Joan's grandfather, who was the first Black detective in the city and was lynched by his peers. As Joan confronts her past, including a cousin who once harmed her, she channels her emotions into art, sketching the women around her and uncovering deeper family secrets and curses.
