Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's work, first published in 1767, is a five-act comedy that premiered in Hamburg on September 30, 1767. This complete new edition includes a biography of the author and is edited by Karl-Maria Guth. The text is based on the edition of Lessing's works published by Herbert G. Gopfert and others, with precise pagination noted in the margins. The cover design features an image by Joshua Reynolds, and the text is set in Minion Pro, 11 pt. Born in 1729 in Kamenz, Lessing studied theology and philosophy in Leipzig. At just eighteen, he published his first poems and stories, inspired by Molière and Voltaire. In Berlin, he wrote critiques for the Berlinische Privilegierte Zeitung and began crafting his first dramas. He earned a degree in philosophy and became involved in Berlin's literary scene, befriending prominent figures like Friedrich Nicolai and Moses Mendelssohn. His 1755 work, "Miss Sara Sampson," marked the first German bourgeois tragedy. Elected to the Prussian Academy of Sciences, Lessing became the dramaturg at the new Hamburg National Theatre in 1767, where he published the "Hamburgische Dramaturgie." From 1770 to 1781, he served as a ducal librarian in Wolfenbüttel and joined the Hamburg Masonic Lodge. His 1779 play, "Nathan der Weise," is celebrated for its themes of tolerance and humanity, solidifying his legacy in the Enlightenment. Lessing passed away in 1781, just before the Berlin premiere
