Meer over het boek

John Steinbeck's first major critical and commercial success, and arguably his funniest novel, features a critical introduction by Thomas Fensch in "Penguin Modern Classics." The story follows Danny, a paisano descended from the original Spanish settlers of Monterey, California. Valuing friendship over material wealth, Danny quickly offers shelter to his fellow wanderers after unexpectedly inheriting two houses. Their shared disdain for possessions leads them into a series of daring and often humorous escapades. However, Danny eventually grows weary of his newfound responsibilities and mysteriously disappears. Steinbeck (1902-68), a Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author, is celebrated as one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. He served as a war correspondent during World War II, with his dispatches compiled in "Once There Was a War" (1958). His notable works include "The Grapes of Wrath" (1939), "East of Eden" (1952), and the poignant novella "Of Mice and Men" (1937). Steinbeck's complete works are available in "Penguin Modern Classics." If you enjoyed this novel, you may also appreciate "Cannery Row," another of Steinbeck's works in the same collection. "Steinbeck...tells the stories of these lovable thieves and adulterers with a poetic purity of heart and prose." ("New York Herald Tribune").
