In Upper Austria, there is almost nothing that does not exist: hilly and flat landscapes, lakes, forests, and glacial mountains. This diverse nature is complemented by an ancient cultural heritage. Time-honored monasteries and abbeys, expanded into impressive complexes during the Baroque period, once served as spiritual and economic centers of the region. Elaborately restored castles and palaces, many of which are accessible and worth a visit, dot the landscape. The cities and markets are equally noteworthy, with Hallstatt shaping epochs, Linz and Steyr reflecting industrial influences, and Freistadt and Schärding exuding charm.
