Cristina Barroso's artistic work primarily explores the relationships between space/time and communication. Her poetics focus on metaphors of territory (geographies and experiences), measurement concepts (accruals and absences), proximity and distance, and the dynamics of movement or stillness, encompassing sociability and conflict. The seemingly abstract transforms into the concrete, while the concrete takes on abstract qualities. Barroso employs a variety of materials, including traditional ones, in her paintings, collages, and drawings. These works juxtapose signs, symbols, and maps with pictorial elements like color patches and text, challenging the rationality of geographical symbols. The patches and text often represent figures that create connections between space, pathways, and even incommunicability. Born in São Paulo and currently based in Stuttgart, Barroso's art has been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Cees Nooteboom describes her work as both innocent and sophisticated, simple yet complex, revealing a land that feels both distant and near, accessible only through her artistic lens.
