Meer over het boek
This influential work was a staple for scholars from the Middle Ages through the sixteenth century, having been translated into every European language and into English nearly a dozen times. Its enduring appeal justifies a new translation after nearly a century. Boethius's unique blend of prose and verse resembles the dialogue and chorus of Greek plays, adding to its literary significance and emotional depth, especially given the circumstances of its creation. While some editions feature a bust claimed to represent Boethius, its authenticity is questionable. The Hope Collection at Oxford offers a different portrait, but I chose to include a reproduction from a plaster cast in the Ashmolean Museum. This cast, derived from an ivory diptych in Brescia, depicts Boethius's father, Narius Manlius Boethius, providing insight into the consular attire of the period and the decline of contemporary art. The consul is shown in a richly embroidered cloak, holding a staff topped with the Roman eagle and a napkin used for starting circus races, with palms and bags of money at his feet—symbols of victory in the games. I extend my gratitude to the Ashmolean Museum authorities and Mr. T.W. Jackson for their assistance in this endeavor.
