Eva Kershaw is happy living with her dear friend Alice, who has been like a mother to her. Their house in the Lancashire village of Heyshaw has been an oasis of peace. But now, three years after the end of the Great War, Alice is dying. Eva is further upset by the unexpected arrival of Gus Blake, Alice's nephew. Alice's main regret is that she never had children, and she's determined Eva shall not make the same mistake. She sees in Gus - young, handsome and confident - the answer to her prayers.
