After decades of warfare, Malazan forces are close to consolidating the Quon Talian mainland when Emperor Kellanved orders a new campaign to invade Falar. Meanwhile, the theocracy of Falar is not defenseless; its priests wield a terrifying weapon, the Jhistal, rumored to be a gift from the sea-god Mael. The Emperor, aboard his flagship Twisted—a vessel believed to be otherworldly—sails toward Falar. In the Ice Wastes and among the islands of Falar, the Malazan Empire confronts two seemingly insurmountable challenges, each threatening its very existence during these bloody and turbulent times.
