In 1942, Friedrich, a young man from Switzerland, arrives in Berlin with dreams of becoming an artist. At a life drawing class, he becomes captivated by the beautiful model, Kristin, who introduces him to the vibrant city. She teaches him to navigate the dangers of wartime Berlin, and they share romantic moments in an underground jazz club, enjoying cognac and dancing. As Friedrich falls in love, the war seems distant, and their life at the Grand Hotel feels luxurious, with black market access to Champagne and fresh fruit. However, the atmosphere in the city grows increasingly oppressive as the Nazi Party tightens its grip on daily life, instilling fear among Berliners. Kristin's true loyalties remain ambiguous, and Friedrich's world shatters when she returns one day, battered and in tears, revealing her real name is Stella and that she is Jewish, passing as Aryan. As he comforts her, Friedrich realizes Stella's situation is precarious, with the Gestapo looming over her. Confronted with Stella's harrowing choices, he grapples with the harsh realities of their time.
