George needs his wife 'like a snail needs its shell', but Ellen has gone, leaving him with only a series of instructions and a need dachshund puppy. Lizzie lives in refuge, her body covered in scars. She has spend most of her life on the outside looking in, but now everything is changing, if she can just keep her secret... Dan is a counsellor with OCD, a gardener of other people's thoughts, but so far his most meaningful relationship is with his Labrador, Fitz. Humans are consumed by things we cannot control or change; dogs live from one falling leaf to the next. This is a novel about three people learning to make their way in life, to make connections, and to find joy in living off the leash.
