The book explores the place and role of two forms in 19th-century culture and everyday life: illness diaries and painters' sketchbooks, highlighting a phenomenon known as the privacy turn. Participants included not only professional artists but also amateurs from various social backgrounds, regardless of gender and age. Drawing on previously unknown archival sources, it reveals the significance of this movement and examines specific examples, such as Wanda Czartoryska’s illness diary and the Branicki family's sketchbooks, which feature unknown sketches by the young Wojciech Kossak. The work emphasizes the diversity of these forms and the transformations they experienced, offering insights into the recorded legacies of everyday life during this period.
