A community of Dig Hands works tirelessly to clear away the wreckage, exchanging their labor for digging gear, a rehabilitated bicycle, and a small stipend. Among them is Orville Anders, who is determined to find his brother Bernard, the beloved radio DJ who miraculously continues to broadcast from beneath the rubble. For months, Orville has lived in a makeshift community of campers surrounding the Heap, speaking to Bernard each evening during his radio show. Their conversations have become a sensation, attracting the attention of Sundial Media, which pressures Orville to promote products during their talks. When he refuses, his access to Bernard is abruptly cut off, yet he continues to hear his own voice on the airwaves, promoting brands as if he were still conversing with his brother. This leads to a darkly humorous tale filled with conspiracy and revenge, exploring the unique bonds of community and the enduring connections that define us amidst chaos.
