Sunny tries to shine despite his troubled past in the third novel of the acclaimed Track series by Jason Reynolds. Four kids from different backgrounds—Ghost, Patina, Sunny, and Lu—are chosen for an elite middle school track team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics. Each has much to lose and prove, not only to one another but also to themselves. Sunny, the main character, is the chillest member of the Defenders team, always sporting a goofy smile. However, he carries a heavy burden: he believes he is a murderer because his mother died giving birth to him. His father's cold demeanor reinforces this belief, making Sunny feel responsible for her death. The only thing his dad seems to value is Sunny's ability to win races, but Sunny has never enjoyed running. In a moment of defiance, he stops mid-race, worsening his relationship with his dad and leaving his friends behind. When Coach asks what he wants to do instead, Sunny surprises everyone by expressing a desire to dance. However, dancing doesn't fit with being on a track team. In a brilliant twist, Sunny discovers the discus throw, a sport that combines elements of hip-hop, ballet, and dance, allowing him to express himself and confront his inner turmoil.
