Following the events of Tarzan of the Apes, the story explores Tarzan's feelings of dislocation after giving up his chance to marry Jane Porter. He travels to Europe to visit his friend Paul d'Arnot, where he becomes entangled in a dangerous situation involving Countess Olga de Coude and her husband, Count Raoul. As Tarzan navigates treachery from the scheming Nikolas Rokoff and his accomplice Alexis Paulvitch, he uncovers family secrets that complicate the plot and test his strength and resolve.
