In issuing these volumes of a series of Handbooks on the Artistic Crafts, our general aims are to provide trustworthy text-books of workshop practice, informed by experts who critically examine current methods and establish a standard of quality in design-related crafts. We aim to treat design as an integral aspect of good workmanship, recognizing that, historically, many arts were undervalued, with design often reduced to mere appearance. The mechanical reproduction of designs by artists unfamiliar with production processes led to a disconnect between design and craft. Influenced by thinkers like Ruskin and Morris, it became clear that true design is inseparable from quality craftsmanship, encompassing material selection, purpose-driven contrivance, expert workmanship, and proper finishing—far beyond mere ornamentation. Workmanship, when too detached from innovative design, declines, while ornamentation devoid of craftsmanship becomes superficial. Proper ornamentation is a visual language, expressing thoughtful creativity through tools. Furthermore, we wish to present artistic craftsmanship as viable occupations for those seeking a livelihood. Unlike the competitive realm of academic art, where few succeed, artistic craftsmanship offers a path to success for those willing to invest time in apprenticeship.
