In a pagan village shrouded by forest, Évike stands out as the only woman without power, deemed an outcast due to her corrupted bloodline—her father was a Yehuli, a despised servant of the king. When soldiers from the Holy Order of Woodsmen arrive to take a pagan girl for a blood sacrifice, Évike is betrayed by her community. However, a monster attack on their journey leaves only her and the cold, one-eyed captain alive. This captain is Gáspár Bárány, a disgraced prince whose father seeks pagan magic to strengthen his rule. Gáspár fears his zealous brother's ambitions for the throne could lead to a violent reign that threatens both pagans and Yehuli. Sharing a bond of alienation, Évike and Gáspár form a fragile alliance to thwart his brother's plans. Their journey takes them from the harsh northern tundra to the polluted capital, where mutual disdain gradually transforms into affection. As Évike reconnects with her estranged father and uncovers her hidden magic, she and Gáspár must navigate trust and betrayal, ultimately deciding where their loyalties lie and what sacrifices they are willing to make for a nation that has never embraced them.
