In 1944 Corfu, five-year-old Matilde and three-year-old Anna are taken from their mother as the Nazis invade. They are hidden by Agata and her husband in a remote location, where Agata comforts them with bedtime stories while remaining vigilant against the soldiers searching for Jews. One fateful day, a German soldier unexpectedly arrives, threatening their fragile safety. Fast forward to 2016, Amber and her husband arrive in Corfu from England, seeking a fresh start amid the challenges of pregnancy. As tensions rise between them, Amber becomes intrigued by the local history of the two little girls hidden during the war. However, not everyone welcomes her curiosity, and some prefer to keep the island's painful past buried. Determined to uncover the truth about Matilde and Anna, Amber faces the dilemma of whether the secrets she discovers can lead her to happiness or drive her away from the island forever.
