Meer over het boek

In September 1939, as the Nazis invade Warsaw, social worker Irena Sendler watches in horror from her apartment. The city's impoverished residents are already suffering, and Irena is determined to continue delivering food and supplies to those in need, including the forbidden Jewish population. Her circumstances change dramatically when she is taken before Gestapo agent Klaus Rein, who offers her a position managing soup kitchens to maintain a facade of order. Despite her reluctance to work for the Germans, Irena discovers ways to resist, including forging documents to ensure Jewish families receive food meant for Aryans. As Irena becomes more daring, her relationship with Klaus grows increasingly dangerous. Although he suspects her actions, he lacks evidence. With Warsaw's Jews confined to the ghetto, Irena realizes that merely providing food is insufficient. She joins the underground resistance group Zegota and embarks on a bold mission to rescue Jewish children. They are smuggled out in baskets and garbage carts, or guided through sewers to safety, each success inciting Klaus's wrath. As he seeks to suppress the resistance, Irena finds herself in a perilous game of cat-and-mouse, where any mistake could cost her life and the lives of those she strives to save.
