Welsh coal was the engine of industry in the 19th and early 20th century and the only way to get it to where it was needed was by rail. Railways played a crucial role in the hills and mountains of Wales then, opening up even the most remote regions. Alas, those days ended as mines closed and governments decided in the mid-20th century that rail travel was no longer economic and drastically cut service. This little book re-kindles some of the romance that used to cause little boys' eyes to light up as the steam breathing monsters roared by their houses.
