Set in Boston during 1870, the story follows James Osgood, a struggling publisher, who sends his clerk, Daniel Sand, to retrieve Charles Dickens's unfinished manuscript after the author's sudden death. When Daniel goes missing and is later found dead, Osgood teams up with Daniel's sister, Rebecca, to uncover the truth. Their investigation leads them through a perilous world of opium dens, ruthless criminals, and literary elites, as they race against time to solve the mystery and protect their lives.
