An adult orphan with striking red hair and a missing hand, known as "Freckles," seeks employment with a lumber company in the Limberlost Swamp. Despite his youth and disability, he impresses the field manager, McLean, who names him after his father. Tasked with guarding the timber, Freckles navigates a challenging seven-mile perimeter while facing threats from a notorious thief, Black Jack Carter. Living with a caring couple, he finds a sense of belonging as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and bravery in a harsh environment.
