Wilkie Collins began the story in 1887, drawing character traits from notable figures he encountered at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub. After Collins's death in 1889, Sir Walter Besant completed the work, which had already started serialization. The published volume includes Besant's preface detailing their collaboration, enriching the reader's understanding of the novel's origins.
