The first militia muster in the U.S. occurred on September 16, 1565, in St. Augustine, tasked with guarding supplies while their leader attacked a French settlement. The National Guard, primarily a state militia under the governor's control, consists of part-time soldiers with civilian jobs. We celebrate the National Guard on July 4th and Memorial Day.
