In a medieval village ravaged by disasters, a motherless shepherd boy becomes the unlikely center of a power struggle that tests faith in brutal ways. Little Marek, the troubled son of the village shepherd, has never known his mother, who was said to have died during childbirth. His only solace comes from his bond with Ina, the blind midwife who nurtured him and many other children. Ina possesses a remarkable ability to connect with nature, granting her insights into sacred knowledge that surpass those of the villagers, no matter their devoutness. While some fear her home in the woods, viewing it as a godless place, Father Barnabas, the town priest, aligns himself with the corrupt lord Villiam, who hoards wealth in his manor. The villagers' desperate hope for benevolent forces is cruelly tested by Villiam and Barnabas during a year marked by severe drought and famine. However, when Marek finds himself entangled with the lord's family, unforeseen and mystical forces disrupt the established order. By the end of the year, the boundaries between blindness and sight, life and death, and the natural and spiritual realms will blur significantly.
