On a bleak November day, Richard Jury rides old doubledecker bus #14 travelling to Fulham Road when a woman boards the bus in front of the Stargazey pub, leaves, reboards, and leaves again. Curious, he follows her to the gates of Fulham Palace. Had he gone beyond the gates, he might have averted a murder and later another at a crusty old men's club.
