Set against the backdrop of 1930s England, the story follows Jane Hennessey, a maid who exploits her employer, Lady Caroline Melchester, amid a web of personal and social turmoil. As Lady Caroline's affair with Adam Brownlow leads to tragic consequences, Adam grapples with grief and resentment after his sister Charlotte's death. With the onset of World War Two, he joins the British army, where he encounters his lover's twin sons, intertwining their fates in a desperate struggle for survival during the Normandy invasion.
