Set in the summer of 1903, this novel follows John Strock, a federal inspector investigating mysterious phenomena in the Eastern United States. He discovers that these events are caused by Robur, a brilliant inventor from Verne's previous work, who has created a versatile machine called the Terror, capable of incredible speeds and various modes of transportation. As Strock attempts to apprehend Robur, he becomes a captive instead, leading to a dramatic conclusion involving a lightning strike that leaves Robur's fate ambiguous. The themes explore tyranny and the fear of technological power.
