Set in the early sixteenth century, the story follows William of Widford as he uncovers a skeleton tied to a centuries-old gold theft. His quest leads him to Italy, where he encounters a cunning woman bandit, and back to England, where he teams up with Joan, the headmaster's daughter. After rescuing her from the Knights of Saint John, their adventure continues with William facing abduction, enslavement by Barbary pirates, and ultimately returning to earn his degree and serve in King Henry VII's intelligence service.
